Busiest Moving Day
Busiest Moving Day

Canada Day isn’t just known as a day to celebrate our country, in the storage and moving industries it’s also known as the busiest moving day of the year across the country. We have some interesting facts about why July 1st is the busiest moving and storage day of the year; but more importantly we have some helpful tips to assist you if you happen to be faced with moving and storage this coming weekend.

Moving Day, officially recognized in Quebec as July 1, stems from a law to have the common lease dates run from July 1 to June 30 so that students weren’t moving in the middle of the school year, and so no one was potentially left out in the cold. While Moving Day isn’t an official event with the rest of Canada, July 1 is still the busiest moving day of the year for the country.

According to Two Men and a Truck, a national moving company, approximately 4.4 million Canadians move each year, with 50 per cent of moves taking place between the beginning of June and mid-September. The article is an interesting read, but you likely won’t have time to read it right away if you’re faced with moving or putting your valuables in storage this coming week.

An early summer move makes a lot of sense for many people. Children are home for the summer, if moving from one community to the next – or across the country – it allows them to finish the school year at one school before moving on.  It provides time for everyone to get adjusted to their new home and community.

Weather is also a factor. No one likes moving in the winter, if they have a choice, when you have to deal with slick roads and snow, along with inclement weather conditions.

If you will be moving this summer, we’ve found some helpful tips we would like to share with you:

  • Use the right size boxes
  • Put heavier items at the bottom of boxes, with lighter items on top
  • Don’t leave empty spaces in boxes
  • Clearly label boxes with contents
  • Tape boxes well
