It’s one of the most common questions we get as a storage unit company in SE Calgary: “What can I (and can’t I) store in a storage unit?” As you’re reading this article, chances are you’re already responsibly researching the general rules of a storage bay for rent. While there are many resources available that will help you, most fail to provide real-life scenarios.
You’ve likely come across other blogs listing what you can’t store in a unit (ie: living things, perishable goods, illegal items, and flammable products). Today, we want to focus on what this means for the items that you can store. Here are some of the most common goods that our clients keep safe in our storage bays for rent, and some tips for good practices.
From photo albums to seasonal clothing, gardening equipment to art supplies – the list of household items that you can store is endless. While most items are safe to store, there are a few things to keep in mind.
If you’re storing bathroom items, it’s best to leave out nail polish remover, sunscreen, rubbing alcohol, hairspray and other aerosol sprays as they fall into the flammable category. If you’re looking to store gardening supplies, be sure lawn mowers are drained of oil and gas and leave out fertilizer and weed killer. Carefully read labels to determine if they contain toxic chemicals and be aware of flammable items.
If you’re unsure, we are happy to answer your questions and make recommendations that will keep your items safe.
Businesses are increasingly looking into storage units as a solution for storing merchandise, inventory, and extra swag. Depending on the merchandise you’re storing, a heated or climate-controlled unit may be the best option for your business. Be sure to check out our blog specifically talking about this topic!
A popular use for storage units is seasonal items like Halloween and Christmas decorations, camping gear, and outdoor equipment like mountain bikes, snowboards and skis, kayaks, and canoes. Before you stow away your goods for the season, be sure that batteries are taken out and items are stored in appropriate containers.
For outdoor gear, it’s important to wipe them down with a towel to make sure they’re dry and free of moisture. Remember, you want to avoid storing wet items as this can invite mold and mildew to form.
Furniture is one of the most common items stored in our units. While they are generally safe and pose very few potential issues, we recommend protecting your furniture with blankets or large plastic coverings and opt for a climate-controlled or heated unit.
Our secure storage units in SE Calgary are a great place to store your appliances. Refrigerators, freezers, stoves, microwaves, toasters, washers, dryers, and other smaller appliances can be kept safely in a storage unit.
Be sure to thoroughly clean your stove and microwave so there are no traces of oil and wipe your refrigerator, freezer, and washing machine down to take out any moisture. We recommend wrapping up appliance cords for added safety.
Electronics are safe to store in one of our climate-controlled storage bays for rent. When keeping electronics in storage, pack them in boxes or wrap them up to prevent dust from accumulating. Be sure to take out batteries, ink cartridges, and other components that can corrode over time.
Vehicles, boats, and RVs
Storage companies differ when it comes to storing vehicles. Our outdoor storage units in Calgary can house vehicles up to 40ft long and are ideal for any type of car, SUV, truck, motorhome, RV, snow machine, quad, sportscar, boat, travel trailer, or 5th wheel.
